Cloud-to-Cloud or C2C backup is has been around for a few years and will in a few years be the dominate method of backing up your data as more of your data moves into the cloud.
Some businesses no longer have their critical data on their own premises, and those that do are gradually migrating their on-premise data to the cloud. Whether or not this is voluntary or forced by a vendor makes no difference, there is a steady and natural progression of data to the cloud.

Cloud storage has in the past been a subject business owners needed educating on, but virtually all business owners and hopefully all IT Admins know the pros and cons of cloud storage.

C2C backup will back up your data from the cloud it is stored to another cloud. The most popular cloud service in use in Office 365 from Microsoft. Small biz and enterprises alike use O365 for their email, SharePoint sites and OneDrive file storage and sharing. C2C can easily backup that data to any non-Microsoft cloud such as AWS, Wasabi, Google, Backblaze B2 and many more.

If my data is stored in the cloud, why do I need to back it up again?

For a start, nearly 60% of decision-makers and IT Directors said they had experienced data loss from a cloud service or SaaS. Data loss can mean, accidental deletion, employee mischief, external cybercriminals or data corruption. Your cloud service provider might provide some history for a restore, but the options and history periods vary tremendously between service providers and within the types of service; i.e. Business, Personal etc.

How do C2C backups help?

An online backup is a very formal and robust service which stored your data online in a secure location and retains it for however long you require it. With today's legal, tax and insurance compliance laws, it is best practice to retain all backed-up data for at least 10 years. With litigation becoming a quick way to earn money nowadays, most organisations keep every email sent and received by everyone in their employment

Online backup is very different from a cloud backup such which allows you to sync and share data with your colleagues and friends. These systems are easy to us, but simply don't protect you from data loss as well as an online backup which no one can tamper with.

An online backup will also have the in-built facility to simultaneously store your data on hundreds of different clouds globally. No matter what happens to your data, of the backed-up copy, there will be another backup distributed elsewhere.

Achieve archive policies

Regardless of whatever security and data policies your organisation adopts, the online backup can be easily adapted to suit your need and not the other way around. All too often organisations have their backup strategy and archive policies dictated by how much tape or storage space they have, backup time window available for the backup to run, available internet bandwidth to upload large data sets.

With C2C backups, the data isn't backed-up from your premises, it is as the name suggests backed-up from one cloud to another. You decide where you want the backup to be initiated from and simply let our backup software do the rest. The backup reports will come to you and your time via email and on our real-time dashboard.

Is C2C backups a true archive?

Ask 10 techies and you will get 20 different answers! A true archive (let's look at email) will store every block of data as it is generated. This can be an inbound or outbound email, new file or any database change. An online backup will normally run only once per day, so an inbound email which is deleted and purged won't be backed-up because it won't exist come the time of the daily backup.
The truth is that only an archival system will watch for new data (howsoever it lands on your network) and store it elsewhere so that you can produce it later should you require it. Archival systems will have built-in auditing features which will help you find data transaction from days, months and years ago.

A great middle option is continuous protection or CP and our backup software comes with it built-in for free. Whenever a file is modified on a protected device within certain parameters, the backup will automatically run and backup the new modification

C2C costs

The traditional method for storing backups was on a server drive provided by a server, NAS or SAN. We used this very same process for more than 15 years as did everyone else. Some online backup providers still adopt this method because they have invested heavily in hardware which is now legacy. You can spot these a mile off because they will be charging a lot of money for their storage and will also be selling fixed slabs or quotas such as 1TB for £100.
With cloud storage, you should be paying per GB. i.e. you store 1GB, you pay for 1GB; your store 100TB, you pay for 100TB. Every top-tier cloud provider (Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Wasabi) sells their storage in this way and they all use object storage. Wasabi round up their storage pricing to the nearest TB, but that is small change to an online backup provider.
It is possible to buy good old-fashioned disks (using Hyper V) from Microsoft Azure should you need to run software which requires a fixed drive. Admittedly we have a few clusters running in this model because they have been migrated from our data centre to Microsoft Azure from a version of Ahsay which required a fixed drive letter. We still charge storage on these on a per GB model and our resellers have the same experience.
