Online backups and bandwidth hogging

Postby Support » Tue Nov 21, 2017 8:54 am

One of the more common questions we get asked is how to back up without hogging all of the customer's internet bandwidth. This can be a problem during the first initial large backup.

In recent years we found that the amount of data a customer had was relative to their available bandwidth, i.e. if a customer could afford to back up 10TB of data, they would also have an IT budget large enough to store their data on enterprise level servers and they could afford a faster internet connection.

In the last 5 years our prices have reduced a lot and so has the cost of server hard disks whilst their capacity has grown tremendously. This results in customers backing up more data than their internet connection can handle. Because of this, backups are consuming the internet bandwidth during office hours and impeding staff from working. A quick fix for this is to turn off backups during the day.

Why is this a problem?
When backups run they will stage data ready to be backed up. If the backup stops suddenly, this data will be placed in the 'retention' area and cannot be used. On the next backup, the process is repeated and the backup can take much longer to finish.

We recommend leaving each backup schedule to run until complete and throttle the bandwidth used by the backup. This is done from the customer's page inside the reseller portal

The setting can be found in 'manage backup account settings » \ bandwidth'
